In 2012 Steve Gurney, a certified Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP)  Instructor was lifeguarding via SUP for Annual Lake Swim in his community of Reston, Virginia. There were several other lifeguards who played lacrosse and the conversation turned to that sport.
