Offering access to the entire rectum and more precise excision than standard transanal excision, TEM requires no surgical incision and is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, with more than 95 percent of patients discharged directly from the recovery room following surgery.Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is offered only at about 100 locations in the U.S., as it requires special equipment and surgeons with special training and experience. I perform more TEM procedures than any surgeon in the country at University of Vermont Medical Center.
