Terrible customer service! My experience with Haston Recycling was a classic example of "bait and switch."

I called Haston Recycling in Atkins, Arkansas and asked how much they were paying for tin cans. I mentioned vegetable and dog food cans specifically, and I was told $0.40 per pound. I thought this was high, but I believed what I was told. After I hung up, I realized I failed to ask what they were paying for aluminum cans. When I called back, I was again told $0.40 per pound. Again, this sounded odd to me--that they would pay the same for aluminum cans as they did for dog food cans--but again, I believed them.

When I took my cans in to them today, I stopped by the office to check in and find out how the weighing was done. (When I sold cans before, I had to drive across the scales first, so I wanted to make sure that was still the case. The girl in the office told me that I would not have to do that because the guy who unloads my truck would do the weighing--so I drove into the building as I was directed. The man, however, told me that I would have to drive across the scales first. This incompetence on the girl's part should have alerted me that I would not have a good experience with them.) The weighing process itself was a fiasco, and after all was said and done, not only did they short me 20 pounds (the scale read 4140 when I went in and 4060 when I left, but they only paid me for 60 pounds instead of the 80 their scales read), they only paid me $0.05 per pound. When I told the girl who paid me that I was told $0.40 per pound on the phone, she said, "We can't pay the same for dog food cans as we do for aluminum cans." I understand that, but that was not my concern. My concern was that I was told one price over the phone and when I had already had my truck unloaded, I was not only shorted the 20 pounds, but was paid much less than the price I was quoted. The choice to receive $.05 per pound should have been mine to make, but their deceptive business practice took that choice away from me. The girl who paid me just kept saying, "we can't pay the same for dog food cans that we pay for aluminum cans." I get that! She didn't seem to understand that my complaint was about something bigger than the $0.35 per pound difference. My complaint is based on principles--something this company seems to be lacking.
