My guideline is asking myself, “If this was one of my family, how would I want them treated?” Patients and their families are people who need guidance, reassurance, and honest conversations to help achieve a well-lived life. I listen to my patients and engage them in decisions. I make complicated topics understandable for them. A successful outcome means that a patient feels empowered to make a change. They understand their medical concerns, and they are willing to provide feedback on our collaborative decisions. The most rewarding thing about my work is realizing the goal I set long ago.
