We return profits to members in the form of bonus interest on deposits and interest rebates on loans and mortgages.
Starnews Credit Union was formed in 1951 by a group of employees from the Toronto Star. At that time, mortgages and personal loans were difficult for the average worker to obtain. Recognizing the financial needs of fellow workers, the group decided to pool their money together and form a credit union that could provide banking products and services for the employees of Torstar Corporation, and their immediate family members.
Since 1951 a lot of things changed and Starnews has changed too. Today, we have state of the art technology and a vast array of financial products and services to offer our members. What has remained the same, is we are still owned and controlled by members, and we continue to offer personalized service through our committed and professional staff. While some banks are still making it costly for the average consumer to use their services, our mission is to be a financial co-operative that provides a full range of financial products and services for the shared benefit of the members to help them reach a higher goal.
We strive for excellence in the delivery of reliable individually tailored services for each member. I have a very pronounced dislike for the big banks. I don't like to use the word 'hate' because it's a bit strong, but it's close to that. I laugh when I see that "hands in your pocket... hands in your pocket...." commercial. The big banks don't use their hands, they use very powerful vacuums with very long hoses.
I'm a member of Starnews Credit Union and have been since the early days of my Torstar career. You have to be a Torstar employee (or family member) to join, but once you're a member you're a member for life.
Aside from the normal banking tools (online, telebanking) this place offers something very rare in the banking industry these days - personalized service. Everyone that works in the branch I do business with knows my name. it's "Hi Mike" when I arrive.
They offer services and rates that compete with the big boys and often do better just to prove a point.

TD sounds sexy and provocative on the phone. So there.
