He specializes in liver and kidney transplantation. His path to medicine was paved by the hospital experiences of family members, and by observing what he liked about the approach of different clinicians. Sitting at my grandmother's bedside and hearing how she spoke about her favorite doctors is what really inspired me to go into medicine, he says. Dr. Winnick chose transplant surgery because the field is always evolving and every patient case is unique. Dr. Winnick attended medical school at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, did his residency at SUNY Health Science Center/Brooklyn where he served as chief resident and his fellowship at NYU Langone Health. He worked at NYU and Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, and then joined Northwell Health in 2017 to help start the liver transplant program, the first on Long Island. Northwell has been so supportive from the start, says Dr. Winnick. We've been empowered to create a dream team of talented providers who have great camaraderie and represent a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. This diversity helps the team fine-tune a nuanced approach to each patient. Someone from a different background or culture will be able to contribute insights that I can't, which is invaluable in creating a treatment plan that considers the social dynamics relevant to different patients, he says. Our dedicated team is involved for the entire workup process, from evaluation through surgery and follow-up. Everyone plays a crucial part doctors, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and social workers. This team was chosen for the way we work together and provide the best patient care.Dr. Winnick approaches each patient with empathy. How would I feel if I were the one sitting in that chair, if my family member was sitting in that chair? One of my grandmother's biggest compliments for a doctor was that he has heart. Personal connection and attention were big things for her, so that's what I try to embody as a doctor.Although he enjoys surfing, snowboarding and basketball in his down time, he knows how lucky he is to feel excited about his job. I love the people I work with and I love surgery, so it's a joy still to come to work. Read more
