Li Cripps immigrated to Canada in 1990 from China, met her future husband Shane at Red River College in Winnipeg in 1992. Both graduated in June of 1995, with Li taking a college instructor job in Thompson, MB shortly after. They got married in 1997 and their son James was born in 1998.
