Everyone who cares for me was very caring, respectful, kind and professional. I thought I was dying & saw the Angels of God come for me. I had wrote out my obituary, then in 3 mins, God turned it all around and I took my “Victory Walk” out of my room & o to the outside! I had a wonderful team & would definitely highly recommend SSM St. Claire to anyone I come into conversation with. Today, I’m still kicking & is doing great!

I was brought in on August 31 for acute heart failure! I chose to come to St Claire this hospital is absolutely the best from the nurses to the doctors. And I found a wonderful Cardiologist who took excellent care of me and who is my doctor now The nurses are the very best except for one assistant that was not very friendly and was rude and had an attitude Shauna told the nurses and they took care of it! Overall this place gets an A+ from me! Thank you so much St Claire! Food was excellent as well!

Every single person in the surgical facility was caring & professional! Dr. Ferguson, anesthesiologist, took time to talk to me about the initial plan, ask questions & then revise the plan in a way that I was much more comfortable with & created less risk given a past surgical outcome on the other hip done elsewhere. Once I was taken to my room to stay overnight, the staff made sure I was in no pain & had everything I needed. The meals I did eat were surprisingly good for what you think of as hospital food. PT & OT took time with me before I was released to be sure it was safe for me to leave. There was not one person I encountered the whole 30 hours I was at the surgery facility & hospital that made me feel as if they didn’t care. The facilities were all very clean & comfortable. I would not hesitate to have orthopedic surgery there again.

I am deeply disappointed and concerned about the care my family member received at SSM St. Clare.
They were admitted with sodium issues that were considered “resolved” after about 24 hours of “stability,” even though their levels continued to fluctuate throughout their stay. Over 8 days, their physical and mental condition continued to decline. We were shocked when they were discharged, and it felt like our family was being pushed out because they had been there too long. Three days later, their condition worsened and we had to call an ambulance. We specifically requested they not be taken back to SSM St. Clare due to our concerns. At another hospital, we learned they had advanced liver disease and advanced neurological dementia.
We were never informed that we had the ability to contest a discharge. We only learned about this option after seeing signs at Mercy Hospital explaining the process. Given how concerned we were about their condition, it was upsetting that this information was not clearly communicated.
During their stay, they developed a bed sore, yet we found no documentation that it was reported in the nursing notes. We also experienced concerning issues with basic care, including being served moldy grapes. When we reported it, no one seemed surprised. After several days without the room being swept or mopped, it took another 1–2 days after requesting cleaning before someone came. We also witnessed the same nurse use the same needle twice and fail after 6 attempts to get a successful draw without calling for additional assistance.
I want to recognize Dr. Meir, the first nephrologist, who was compassionate, listened to our concerns, and took the time to explain what was happening. The general physician (whose name I unfortunately do not remember) was also attentive and followed up regularly, though I did feel my family member was not fully assessed physically during visits.
Unfortunately, our experience with Dr. Mellas was extremely disappointing. He was dismissive, aggressive, and did not take the time to explain what was happening or answer questions. His communication felt intimidating rather than supportive, and a nurse even came in concerned there was a conflict. I had to follow him out to ask questions that should have been addressed during the conversation.
Regardless of expertise, respect, communication, and compassion are essential parts of patient care. Our family trusted SSM St. Clare during an extremely vulnerable time, and we left feeling unheard and deeply concerned. I sincerely hope the hospital reviews its care, documentation, discharge process, and reporting practices so other families do not experience the same.

The pre and post op care teams were wonderful. Friendly, experienced and very thoughtful regarding not only my physical but emotion and mental care. They understand I was a little nervous and talked me through everything…answering all my questions. They were extremely encouraging and helped me get back on my feet immediately. Thank you so much for your professionalism, patience and person attention.
