I had high hopes for the Sanford Auto Train terminal, but the experience before even boarding the train was incredibly disappointing.

The terminal felt less like the start of a relaxing vacation and more like a FEMA emergency shelter. It was overcrowded, uncomfortable, and, unbelievably in central Florida, the air conditioning either wasn’t working or was so ineffective that many passengers chose to stand outside in the sweltering heat because at least there was some airflow. That’s a pretty telling sign when Florida in August feels more comfortable than the inside of the terminal.

What made it even more frustrating was the apparent lack of urgency from Amtrak (and if TSA shares responsibility for the terminal operations, them as well). There didn’t seem to be any concern for passenger comfort or well-being despite hundreds of people waiting for hours in those conditions. When people are voluntarily standing outside in 90+ degree weather to escape the terminal, something is seriously wrong.

The Auto Train is marketed as a comfortable, stress-free alternative to driving, but the Sanford terminal experience completely undermines that promise. Before asking customers to spend thousands of dollars on this service, Amtrak needs to make sure the most basic expectations—like a climate-controlled waiting area in Florida—are being met.

I hope this was an isolated issue, but if not, it deserves immediate attention. Passengers deserve far better than this.

We are normally very pleased with the service and reliability of Amtrak! However, today we are struggling with the heat inside the departure area. Not sure why the air conditioning isn't working, and there's been no announcement. Very uncomfortable! And, I haven't helped myself by wearing long sleeves... Otherwise, five stars!

Sanford, Auto Train Station is well organized. They help passengers with luggage if needed. The waiting area is spacious. They call your car by number once it's ready.
It was a great experience. Highly recommend the Auto Train

This is my fourth trip on the auto train. I also did one trip on the non auto train. All my trips have been in coach. As far as I remember, my past trips went well. Probably four stars. I grew up loving trains, and I like being able to walk around more on the train as opposed to an airplane. Most of the bathrooms might be about the same size. But there is a large handicapped bathroom on each coach car. The sinks are hard to use. My main problem this trip is the coach seats. I don't remember a problem in the past. But this trip the seats are so hard and uncomfortable. I fell asleep some time after the last announcement at 9:30. Just after 11. I woke up and had to stand up and rub my butt. It was hurting enough I couldn't sit back down right away. The seat next to me was empty. I had to fold the blanket we brought and use it as additional cushioning to sit in that seat. Hopefully I can sleep more now. We are past the halfway point now.

Great Amtrak station to travel with my car between Florida and the Northeast. It stops outside of Washington DC in Lorton VA. Then a quicker drive to NY that doesn't rattle me by doing it straight from Florida. The seats are comfortable (like Business Class), they allow you to bring your own food but also have a cafe serving dinner and breakfast in the morning. You can also upgrade to a Roomette or Family Room which includes dinner and breakfast in the Dining Car. Plus you don't have to check your luggage. Just l ave a r all in the car which is stored separately for your overnight journey. Just bring onboard what you need. Pillows, blankets...whatever makes you comfortable. The scenic ride is beautiful. Only way I travel now between NY and FL. No Rental cars, no baggage fees....relaxing and cost effective.
