Matthews, MD, PhD, received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Boulder. She completed clinical and research fellowships in geriatrics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine with a certificate added qualifications in geriatric medicine. As an internist and geriatrician, Dr. Matthews specializes in providing primary care services to patients age 65 and older. In addition to caring for patients at Senior Primary Care, she continues to teach and has been involved in research regarding physical activity and cognition, serving as a guest lecturer at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Matthews has pursued additional training in acupuncture at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and functional medicine training through the Institute for Functional Medicine, with the goal of optimizing non-pharmacologic approaches to health in older adults. She also is published in medical journals, including the American Geriatric Society, on topics ranging from physical activity and risk of depression in the elderly to assessing memory impairment.
