He returned to Florida to receive his M.D. degree from the University of Florida in 1972. Following medical school, he took his internship at the University of Miami School of Medicine and then completed his residency at Duke University. Dr. Cope returned to Pinellas County, Florida in 1978 to begin his career in ophthalmology. His mother and father were physicians practicing ophthalmology in St. Petersburg in the 1940s, where ophthalmology was barely present.
