He obtained his undergraduate degree from St. John's University in Minnesota and earned his medical degree from the University of South Dakota. He completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and his fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis. While Dr. Bendewald's practice focuses in bariatric surgery, he is also experienced in performing surgeries related to a wide variety of conditions ¬- gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), paraesophageal (hiatal) hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, inguinal and ventral/incisional hernia, achalasia, gallbladder disease and diverticulitis. He also performs enterra and gastroparesis along with surgeries to treat both colon and gastric cancer. In surveys conducted by Madison Magazine, Dr. Bendewalds's peers have consistently named him as one of Madison's Top Doctors for bariatric surgery. Dr. Bendewald is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
