There are 2 patient aides, and 3 nurses, who I can honestly say are amazing. The doctors in here don’t like when the patients ask questions regarding their diagnosis either. So far this admission. I definitely would not recommend. Saturday (December 20,2025) this was the next to the last night of my admission here. When I needed something tht I couldn’t get for myself, I did as they always told me to do, which was push my call button. I understand that I am not the only patient and I know there are other patients more worse off than myself, but to have my call light button on for over 2 hrs is unacceptable. It was like they were telling me, I had over stayed my welcome. Then today (Sunday, December 21st) I asked for pain medication and zofran (Nausea medication), I originally asked at 9am, didn’t get the Pain Medicine until 2pm(7hrs is unbelievably and unforgivably long time) by the time I got the pain medication, I was climbing the walls, and then the nurse( Molly)said “let’s wait an hour for the pain med to take effect) so I had to wait 2 more hours before I could get the nausea medicine. By then I was on the verge of throwing up.
I understand that there is a shortage of staff here to attend to the patients needs, but the staff half the time are joking it up with other patients and their families, or hanging around the nurses station talking about what they are doing after there shift or on their days off. This I was personally witnessing as my room (314) is right across from the nurses station.
If my enemy had to go somewhere to get chronic care, I would never have them come here. I work with physical therapy during the week, and I witness other patients having issues with the staff waiting forever for their lights to be answered. I don’t even know if I am going to another facility or home. On Friday, the discharge planner never solidified where I am going after discharge tomorrow. If this is the staff’s normal procedures, I am sorry for the other patients (current and future) the Nurses and Aides who “Care” for these patients, makes me sick to my stomach. They have no compassion for the patients under their care, unless there is family member(s) visiting. Then they get the celebrity treatment. I changed my star rating to 1 STAR, because of the recent treatment I have received.

My mother was under care at Select Specialty Laurel Highlands for just under two months, and she received exemplary care from the medical team there.

From day one, they are focused on doing what it takes to get patients out of the hospital. Like many who find themselves at an LTACH, my mom arrived with a trach and on a ventilator. Over the course of her treatment, she was weaned off the ventilator and eventually the trach was removed. These people are respiratory experts, and the respiratory therapists are not only very knowledgeable about the process, but it’s also clear that they’ve seen everything and know what to do in special cases. My mother had a complication and required care by a physician outside of the hospital, and they went to great lengths to set up a separate appointment and subsequent procedure in a timely manner. My mom has since made a full recovery.

My family was really impressed with the nursing team. My mother was going through a cognitive recovery as well and was not an easy patient. The nurses and nursing assistants took care of her so patiently and worked so hard to tend to her needs, including keeping her from hurting herself, and approached their work with deep empathy. They’re very good about getting patients into chairs every day and the therapists make sure they get some movement.

Since the patients are usually there for at least a month, they get to know their quirks and family members get to know the care team very well. The communication from the case managers and others is better than I’ve experienced at any other facility (hospital or skilled nursing). You get a direct line to the nurse’s station and can call and get someone at any time. They welcome visitors and family members coming to visit as often as they please. If any concerns or issues come up, they are very responsive and work promptly to address them.

It’s hard to convey in a few paragraphs the quality of care provided by this facility, but if you’re in a position where you have a loved one who needs to spend time in a LTACH, Select Specialty in Latrobe is an excellent choice.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the outstanding care I received during my stay. From the moment I arrived, the entire team made me feel like family, creating an atmosphere of warmth and compassion.

I deeply appreciate the thorough examination and the way I was treated with dignity and respect throughout the process. Your professionalism and kindness left a lasting impression on me, and I am truly grateful for your dedication to patient care.

Thank you again for the wonderful care and support. It means more to me than words can fully convey.

My father was sent here to continue healing from having a brain tumor removed due to Glioblastoma. My father arrived at this facility on a Wednesday afternoon from UPMC Western MD. It was Friday afternoon before he was hooked back up to Glucerna for nourishment, (48hrs. with no food), did I mention my father is diabetic, so this was the first unacceptable occurrence. My mother was promised by their representative that dad would receive physical, occupational, and speech therapies, all for the purpose of strengthening him so he could start radiation/chemo once returning home. No therapies were received!! After three weeks, we finally got my father released to a nursing home back in Allegany Co., MD. He arrived 17 lbs. lighter, (only weighed 145 when he went in), and malnourished, weaker than when he left, and talking less, all because their nutritionist refused to raise my father's level of Glucerna intake to match what it had been when he left the ICU at UPMC, despite my mother's constant demands. My family met only three nurses that actually earned the title of "nurse", the rest were rude, lacked care and empathy. My father's roommate told us while sitting in the hall, that they were only doing bare maintenance on my father, despite what they may have been telling us. Needless to say, my father was moved to a different room the next morning, citing the roommate was being "difficult". Yeah right, they overheard him telling us the truth!! Beware of this place!! Due to never getting strong enough to start chemo and radiation, the cancer has come roaring back and my father now only has days left. My mother is blaming herself for sending him to this facility.

I was a patient with Select Specialty. The nurses and aids were outstanding. They were always there to accommodate my needs. I needed alot of care believe me when I tell you. The respiratory were also a God send.
The girls at physical therapy were always cheery and motivating...even though some days I just wasn't feeling like moving...they got me up & moving little by little. I would highly recommend this hospital. Thank you to all who cared for me
