I found Shawna at Taboo Hair Salon the way most of us find a new stylist: by reading an alarming number of Google reviews, determined not to repeat past mistakes and equal parts “I finally found a good one!” and “These sound too good to be true.”.

This was my second visit. The first time she cut my hair and absolutely nailed it. This time I came in with grown-out roots and fading colour thinking, “Let’s just blend this and make it look intentional.” A little hair triage.

Instead, I got a full-blown transformation.

I’d show you the before photo, but I had been making a very deliberate effort not to document what I’ll politely call my transitional chapter.

What Shawna does isn’t just hair. It’s a kind of translation. She asks smart questions, really listens, and somehow turns vague human requests like “warmer but natural” into something that actually works in real life. The blend is seamless. The colour has depth without looking stripey or overdone. The cut has movement without trying too hard. It looks natural, polished, and like I suddenly have my life together.

And the vibe at Taboo deserves its own mention. I was there for three hours and it felt less like an appointment and more like a low-key spa afternoon. Great music (the kind that sends you down memory lane), a relaxed atmosphere, and none of that forced “we’re all having the most fun ever!!!” nightclub energy some salons try to manufacture. Just talented people doing great work in a space that feels calm and welcoming.

Knowing it’s an organic salon is important to me. It somehow makes the whole experience feel even better, like ordering the healthy option and discovering it actually tastes better too.

I left lighter, brighter, and conducting very thorough reflection checks in every window on the way home.

Her reviews are glowing and I’m very happy to add to the pile.

Shawna is wildly talented. I have finally found the right stylist.

I have been coming to this salon for some time, but yesterday may be my last visit.
My hair stylist Tracy is great, and the receptionist Rosie is awesome.
But...while my hair colour was "cooking" there was a woman with a client in the next chair, talking non stop. I don't know whether she was a stylist or the owner, but a lot of the conversation had to do with some of her stuff missing and how she was wondering out loud about whether other staff had taken her things when she wasn't there. She proceeded to carry on this thread of the discussion with the receptionist. This was not a quiet discussion...it was loud and abrasive and it went on for a long time. I just wanted to get out of there.
Clearly not the relaxing visit that I'm used to. And why would a conversation like this be happening where clients could very clearly hear ? I think whatever the issue was could have been handled in a room at the back of the salon so that clients weren't involved.
The whole thing really was sad. I sincerely hope that this woman gets her issue resolved and that if someone is stealing, that the situation be rectified. I just didn't need to hear all about it during my appointment and from what I understand, I wasn't the only person who was upset by this.

I was recently recommend this place by a friend and can I just say it is amazing and I love it. I had the honour of getting my hair done by Gaby. And I just want to say she is so nice and so passionate about cutting hair. Come back to you on that let me think. She made my hair look so good and helped me know what do so with my hair as I’ve struggled with knowing how to cut and style my hair type. Truly loved the experience!!!!! Thank you gaby for the amazing hair I am recommending this place to everyone

Shawna is amazing at her craft. She pays attention to every fine detail, is professional, friendly and courteous. On top of that she made my hair gorgeous!! Loved the color, loved the cut!! Always an amazing experience
