He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi and his M.D. from East Tennessee State University. He completed his post-graduate training in Hematology and Oncology and his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham. From 2002–2003, he participated in development and accrual of research studies pertaining to gastro-esophageal cancer and colorectal cancer.
