Dr. McDermott is widely known for advancing neurosurgical techniques and is an expert in the treatment of a wide variety of neurological disorders. He is one of the world’s leading experts in meningioma—the most common primary brain tumor in adults—and was named the most-published author of papers on meningioma research. Dr. McDermott joined Baptist Health from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center, where he served as co-director of the Gamma Knife radiosurgery and skull base surgery programs, vice chairman of clinical programs from 2001-2012 and held the Wolfe Family Endowed Professor in Meningioma Research. Throughout his career, Dr. McDermott’s research has generated more than 500 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to his clinical and research leadership, he is an accomplished educator and currently leads the neuroscience academic program at Florida International University. As residency program director at UCSF Medical Center for seven years, he trained young surgeons from around the world. Dr. McDermott has been recognized with several professional awards and numerous visiting professor invitations.
