Best cortado of my life. Relatively cheap drinks makes up for the alt milk upcharge (oat and almond). Staff was all really nice and helpful, pointed us to the elevator (head toward "fiction"). Lots of seating, good vibes. I love that they sell fountain pens. Will 1000% be back.

What can I say about this legendary bookstore? Just walking in the door makes me feel smarter! Their book selection is top-notch - fiction and non-fiction. My fave is mysteries and I always find something I've seen nowhere else! It's a must-visit!

Saw David Pogue do a presentation and signing. There was some parking around back, but it fills quickly. Nice selection of books and was easy to purchase. Recommend.

A visit to Politics and Prose feels less like walking into a store and more like stepping into a sanctuary for the written word. The legendary independent bookstore hums with the quiet joy of discovery, its green awning and whimsical window art hinting at the treasures within.

Inside, the air is rich with the scent of paper making it far too easy to lose an afternoon here. The shelves are a labyrinth of possibility: thoughtfully curated displays of literature, history, philosophy, music, and social justice stand shoulder to shoulder with colorful children’s books, elegant calendars, and exquisitely designed notebooks. The “A Little History” series sits proudly by the window, their bright spines inviting you to take one home and learn something new.

The store’s personality shines in its details: staff picks tucked discreetly among the shelves, historical photos chronicling decades of author events, and themed displays that are as intelligent as they are inviting. Whether you’re browsing the Biography, Essays, Drama & Poetry, or Mystery sections, every turn offers a reminder that this is a place curated by people who love books deeply.

Politics and Prose is more than a retailer—it’s a cultural hub. Over the years, it has hosted literary giants and emerging voices alike, fostering a community where ideas are exchanged as freely as books are sold. And yet, it never loses its warmth; you feel welcome whether you’re here for a quick gift or an hour-long browse.

Logistically, it’s well-situated—easy to reach by car or public transit, with nearby street parking and dedicated parking to the side of the bookstore—and the coffee shop downstairs is perfect for settling in with your new find. In an age of hurried transactions, Politics and Prose offers something rarer: time, space, and conversation. A Washington institution, and rightly so.

Five stars, without hesitation.
