He received his undergraduate and medical degrees in Tennessee and returned to Texas to continue his medical training at University of Texas Medical Branch in Corpus Christi, Texas and University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. In between his educational training experiences, he served as an instructor and practicing physician at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
