Many people are in pain or anxious when they first come to see me, so I first try to reassure them and help them understand that they are in control of the final decisions about their care. To help them make these decisions, I spend time talking with them and educating them about their disease or illness. I want them to ask questions, and to understand their illness and their options. I ask them, “What are your goals? What do you want to be able to do?” I really enjoy getting to know my patients. I let them know that I’ve been both a patient and a family member of a patient, so I understand what they’re going through. We often end up forming a long-term relationship during their treatment and become good friends. Read more
