He trained at Duke University Medical Center as an intern resident and fellow, completing his fellowship in 1993, in hematology/oncology. He had a Physician Scientist Award and served as a faculty member at Duke Hospital until 1996. He then joined the Watson Clinic in Lakeland, Florida and subsequently started a cancer research clinical trials program. In 2003, he joined the John B. Amos Cancer Center and in 2010, became a Georgia Distinguished Cancer Scholar. He oversees the cancer clinical trials program at the John B.
