His clinical interests are reconstructive surgery, fracture care, arthroscopic surgery, and total ankle replacement. He utilizes evidence-based medicine to optimize operative and nonoperative care for all foot and ankle pathologies. He is particularly interested in advancing minimally invasive techniques, using smaller incisions than traditional open techniques to accomplish the same surgical goals, potentially improve patient outcomes, decrease postoperative pain, and reduce scarring. Zhao is also an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 2017. He remained in Boston for five years of orthopedic residency training at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program, completed in 2022. Following his residency, Zhao completed a one-year subspecialty foot and ankle surgery fellowship in 2023 at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics in Memphis, Tennessee.
