I lived at Design For Recovery from early June 2025 to mid-August 2025. Overall, I had an extremely positive experience.

The environment was supportive, and I got along great with most of the guys in the house. Being around people who were also working on their sobriety made a big difference for me, especially early on. It helped to create a sense of accountability and structure that I needed at the time.

The house managers were also a big positive. They had a lot more time in sobriety than I did, and you could tell they genuinely understood what people were going through. That made it easier to take guidance and stay on track.

Another thing I really appreciated was the access to meetings. There are amazing meetings within walking distance, and the house also provides a van that takes residents to other meetings, which made it a lot easier to stay connected and involved in recovery.

Like any shared living situation, it's not perfect, but if you're serious about your recovery and willing to put in the work, this can be a really helpful place to be.

I'm grateful for the time I spent there and what I was able to take from the experience.

Design has been such a crucial support system in my journey to recovery. Beautiful house and even more beautiful and *actually caring* management and ownership. They are tapped in with all of the best outpatienta and local meetings and are truly in this for the right reasons. Look no further if you're trying to find a place: this really is the best option. I, personally, am infinitely grateful! Thank you Design!

My stay at Design for Recovery has been a truly life-changing experience. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that the program places a strong emphasis on creating a safe, structured, and supportive environment for recovery.

One of the things that stands out the most is how clean and well-maintained the house is. The space is organized, comfortable, and clearly cared for, which makes a big difference when you’re trying to rebuild your life. Living in a clean environment helps set the tone for discipline and self-respect, and it reflects the pride everyone takes in the house.

A huge part of what makes this place special is the leadership of the house managers, Jamal and Sam. Both of them do an incredible job balancing accountability with genuine care. They hold everyone to a high standard while still being supportive, approachable, and understanding. Jamal brings a steady presence that helps keep the house running smoothly, and Sam is always willing to step in with guidance, encouragement, or just someone to talk to when things get tough. Their commitment to the residents and the program really shows.

Another powerful part of living here is the brotherhood that develops among the guys in the house. Everyone is working toward the same goal of staying sober and improving their lives, which creates a strong sense of unity and mutual respect. There’s real accountability here. We check in with each other, support one another through challenges, and celebrate progress together.

Design for Recovery provides structure that helps you stay focused on what matters: recovery, personal growth, and building a healthier future. The expectations are clear, the support is real, and the environment encourages you to take responsibility for your actions while also knowing you’re not alone.

I’m grateful for my time here and especially thankful for the guidance and leadership from Jamal and Sam. Their dedication, along with the brotherhood and structure in the house, has made a lasting impact on my recovery journey.

Design for Recovery has been an incredible place to rebuild and refocus. The environment truly supports you in prioritizing your recovery while also helping you get back on your feet and move forward in life. The structure, accountability, and encouragement here make a real difference.

The house managers genuinely care and are always there when you need guidance or support. Jamal has done an amazing job stepping in and taking over for Hunter — and he keeps the house stocked with awesome food and groceries, which definitely doesn’t go unnoticed.

The house is filled with solid guys who are serious about their recovery, and that makes all the difference. There are tons of opportunities for sober activities, networking, and getting connected with strong 12-step meetings throughout the LA area. It’s more than just a place to live — it’s a community that pushes you to grow.

Grateful to be here and highly recommend it to anyone serious about their recovery.

As a freely member of the sober community I can see very clearly now that I wouldn’t have made it if it hasn’t been for all of the love and support I’ve received throughout the months I’ve been here as a client and then as a manager. I enjoy waking up every day knowing I have the chance to maybe change another life. That wouldn’t have been possible without people like Matt, Jamal, Sam or Hunter who have been there side by side my journey to see me into the man I am today. God bless you Design for recovery and I cannot wait to continue to grow with you.

Can’t say enough good things about Design. I went from being a lifeless junkie without one singular dollar in my pocket to having 2.5 years sober, being at the same job for over a year for the first time, buying my first car, evolving in a way I could never possibly foresee back then. This company is one of the last left in LA that still does great things, and has consistent success stories even to this day. Love everyone here.

Design has been so much more than just a sober living to me. I have made friends that I call family, and learned new ways to cope with sobriety. The team here at Design for recovery has been here for me since day 1 and shown unwavering support for my personal growth. This place helps mold you into a better version of yourself, giving you a reason to continue on this path of sobriety. I could not have asked for a better environment, and I am eternally grateful that I get to be a part of this family. Thank you to Matt, Hunter, Jamal, Pete, and Sam for everything you do to make each of us feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

My son went through a couple of different rehab programs. On his third attempt, he went from rehab to sober living at design for recovery. I cannot express the gratitude and the absolute phenomenal job. I was so very afraid I was going to lose my son, but this sober living gave my son a fresh/clean start. They put him back on track. My son (hunter Johnston) actually started being a leader in this home. They taught him the basics that he had neglecte. Make your bed clean your room pick up after yourself. Be respectful of others. This place gave me my son back. I am absolutely forever grateful. I highly highly recommend. Follow the rules and be true to yourself in sobriety! this place will give you a lot of hope and save lives! :)

“I can’t speak highly enough of my experience at Design for recovery. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and supported by both the staff and the community of residents. The house is clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, creating a peaceful environment for recovery. The staff is compassionate, professional, and always available to offer guidance when needed. They truly care about each resident’s journey and offer tailored support to help you meet your goals.

What stood out most to me was the sense of community—it’s a place where people genuinely lift each other up, and there’s a strong emphasis on accountability and personal growth. The structured program offers a great balance of independence and support, and the house provides a safe space to focus on healing, building new habits, and finding strength in your sobriety.

I’m incredibly grateful for everything I learned here, and I feel confident that the foundation I’ve built at West 83rd will support me as I continue on my recovery journey. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a supportive, nurturing environment to focus on their sobriety!”
