Upon arrival we had trouble getting in the front door because of two large dogs which were blocking the door and jumping up on us. Poor customer service from the beginning.
We were taken into the bar and given a bill for $2100 plus taxes. I immediately complained and said the price we were quoted was $1500 for the week.
Although the bill was voided and we were charged the proper price, the girl was very rude about it.
Had there been any other rooms available in Elliot Lake we would have left immediately. Had I seen the condition of the room before paying, I would not have paid. There was nothing deluxe or luxury to justify the price we were charged for that room.
When we got to the room it smelled of wet dog. There was a half empty beer sitting inside the room. It was obvious that it had not been cleaned.
There were boxes of sink/vanity parts sitting on one of the couches and on top of a chest in the dining area.
We had just spent 3 days travelling across the country and were tired and just wanted to make the best of the situation, but the more we looked around the worse it got.
There was no light in the bathroom shower and our son had to change the bulb himself because no staff was there to do it. The light fixture was in bad shape and looked melted or burned.
The keys we were given did not work and the staff could not find keys for the room at all. We had to trek around the building in the dark, watching out for stacked up building supplies and entering through the back patio doors to even get into the room.
Once the doorknob was changed and keys were finally given to us, we were told that they would not open the front building doors and we would have to go around the back to get in through our room patio doors.
The next day we were told that the outside building doors don't even lock so we didn't need keys for them and could use the front door to our room.
We were unable to secure our belongings in the room at all during the entire week because the patio doors do not lock at all.
There are no curtains in the suite and therefore no privacy even for dressing or sleeping. There are no screens on the doors/windows with the exception of the kitchen
where directly outside the people stand to smoke so we could not even open that one properly.
With no working air conditioning and not being able to open windows for ventilation it was uncomfortably hot.
When we went to go to bed the first night we pulled back the covers to find no sheets on the bed. The blankets were ripped and nasty looking.
When we were not in the room someone entered and left a note and a bottle of wine. The patio doors were left open and we were left dealing with moths and bugs in room.
We had to go into town and buy Febreze to help combat the disgusting smell and finally had to get staff to remove one chair from the suite because it was so disgusting.
The rest of the furniture had to be sprayed daily to keep the smells at bay.
We could not cook due to a filthy stove and no ventilation fan. The only smoke detector visible was not installed, but rather sitting in one of the kitchen cupboards.
The kitchen, which is advertised as a FULL KITCHEN is anything but, and with falling apart cupboards and missing drawers the dirty condition was anything but appetizing.
One night we arrived back very late and could not even use the microwave because there was no bottom plate in it. The next day we tracked down staff and were given a bottom plate for the microwave which
did not fit and they had to go get another one. Not the end of that story because the microwave would not heat up any food at all. We bought food to cook and were forced to eat
out because we could not use the kitchen. Most of the produce we bought had to be thrown out because it froze in the fridge and was ruined.
The website states that there is a HotTub. There is NOT! It is a bathtub...and it was dirty and after cleaning it out ourselves we tried to at least relax in it
but it smelled so badly of dog that we could not use it. More false misleading advertising.
The shower in the bathroom was disgusting, dirty and had mould.
The room was only cleaned once and the door was again left unlocked by staff.
We got 2 clean towels the second day and absolutely no housekeeping after that. We had to go to the front desk looking for toilet paper one morning.
There were personal belongings in the drawers of in the rooms and the bathroom and kitchen.
There is exposed wiring and insulation in the living room area. There were nails sticking out of what looks like baseboards stacked in the bathroom. These are both safety hazards.
There is a freezer full of food in the suite. We were told by Jane that it was for the restaurant and not to touch it. This is a MAJOR health code violation and no food in that freezer
should be served to guests in the restaurant.
On the night before we checked out we arrived back to our room to discover once again someone had been in the suite. There was furniture taken out of the room and other furniture had been moved.
When we confronted Jane with this she insisted that she let people in and stayed the whole time to watch what they were doing. During this time a bottle of Febreze was STOLEN from our room.
I want to make clear that it was not just ONE incident or issue that we had with our stay at Dunlop. There were MANY MANY problems compounded over the week.
First of all I resent being told by Jane that we were given a discount of $600, when in fact we paid the price we were quoted when I made the reservations. Even at $300 per night for a 6 night stay it doesn't come out to $2100.
The room was bad, it should not have been rented out while under renovation and there was no excuse for the dirty conditions and bad service.
Having someone come in the second day to do what should have been done before the room was rented isn't making things right. Ignoring complaints and refusing to give out the names or contact information of the owners/partners
is not making things right. Having to wait a week after we checked out to hear from anyone is not making things right.
The room was under renovations and should not have been rented out while in that state. The health and safety issues were numerous.
Aside from the renovations, the room was dirty and the housekeeping was next to nothing. For $250 per night we should not have to go looking for toilet paper and have no clean towels.
Even though we complained about the kitchen facilities numerous times and not being able to cook, not once were we even offered a meal at the lodges restaurant. The lack of customer service at Dunlop Lodge is as much
a reflection of the low standards as was the condition of the lodge itself.
And while a bottle of Febreze may not be a large ticket item, it was none the less STOLEN from our room during the time Jane and some unknown people were in our room without permission removing furniture and other items.
We paid for a luxury suite and got ripped off. A vacation that I waited 7 years to take was ruined by Dunlop Lake Lodge.
We gave Jane several written pages of complaints as well as these listed here. We took pictures of the condition of the room on the first day and again before leaving.
