I found Quartertonez randomly googling "Arabic music lessons" and couldn't believe my luck that there was actually a school offering this nearby! There is a lot to love about Quartertonez, but what most stands out to me is that the instructors embrace multiple ways of learning music, not just Western classical techniques. As someone with a classical music background, this was something I didn't know I needed going in, but value so much. Strongly recommend! I’ve been a student here for one year. I love it! If you’re interested in guitar/bass/oud, ask to work with Youstine — he is an incredible mentor. And Fuad is a master of Oud.

Quartertonez is special in DC in that it has its roots in Arabic arts. Referencing the Quarter Tone in its name should tell you how proud and prominent this focus is. You can learn instruments like the Oud and Qanun as well as the standard Western instruments you’d find anywhere here, but regardless the teachers have a perspective that goes beyond a Western framework to music. For me, this lends to broader music appreciation and adds an intellectual dimension to learning music theory.

It’s been a pleasure to take Oud classes here. The teachers are so dedicated and supportive, tailoring their approach to each student’s goals. It’s a family-run school and being a student here is like being part of a music family that helps you grow and develop with an instrument while having lots of fun. I highly recommend taking classes here if you want the best instruction and to learn the heart and soul of what it means to play music.
