Built in part thanks to property willed by local philanthropist Thomas M. Fitzgerald, the hospital opened on July 1, 1933. During its 85-year history, the hospital has been recognized for innovative milestones in the field of medicine and patient care. It was the first to introduce a hospital-administered Home Care Program in 1969 and one of the first to provide paramedic services in the early 1980s.
