I chose to be a physician because I wanted to have a direct, positive impact on people’s lives. Early on, I was drawn to be a surgeon because of the immediate impact surgery can have on a patient’s life. That being said, I chose otolaryngology because of the diversity of conditions ENT physicians… I chose to be a physician because I wanted to have a direct, positive impact on people’s lives. Early on, I was drawn to be a surgeon because of the immediate impact surgery can have on a patient’s life. That being said, I chose otolaryngology because of the diversity of conditions ENT physicians treat and the ability to have both an active surgical and office practice. As a “good communicator,” I enjoy the office practice, which gives me the opportunity to educate the person about their medical issues. I believe this allows for a collaborative doctor/patient interaction, which promotes decision‑making based on science and the individual patient’s situation. I am interested in all aspects of my specialty, but my subspecialty interest is in nasal and sinus disease. I have been fortunate to be trained by several of the “pioneers” in sinus surgery and have had an academic career in this area before joining UNC Health Nash. Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of physical activities (yes, I am a “gym rat”), the arts, sports, reading a good book, and immersing myself in nature. As above, my area of “special interest” is rhinology and endoscopic sinus surgery. I have done clinical research in this interest and have taught these procedures to generations of ENT doctors in training during my previous academic career. Specific procedures I perform include endoscopic sinus surgery, septoplasty, and turbinoplasty. I am experienced in all “cutting‑edge” technologies utilized in these procedures. I am accepting new patients age 5–125!! With the help of translation services available, I have no language limitations, but I personally speak English and a smattering of French. Read more
