This facility has been responsible for spread of iron oxides into the city water as well as the surrounding areas. There is also suspicion that it is responsible for raising the local cancer rate due to emissions and dust.
Regarding the theory that without the recyclers we would be swimming in scrap metal, it should be noted there are other recyclers available. Also the processing of scrap by the average local collectors involves improper methods. I.e Collector picks up refrigerator, collector knows its worth more if the compressor has been removed and emptied. Without hesitation the lines are cut allowing noxious fumes to billow in the environment rather then be properly processed.
Note: Ferrous Metals the owner of the yard states their core values on their website, none of which concern the health of any individuals.

-remember we have more than one scrap yard in this city.
-if you make enouhg money through metal recycling they will tax you on it.
-and last as the city of windsor has one the worst unemployment rates in the country without scrap yards alot of people would have no income as well, thus brining up welfare %

I disagree with comment as to what would do without Zalev.
If they were not here it would actually open the way for the city to collect revenue as they already do with recycle program. It would perhaps even help get rid of the scrap collectors who pay no taxes on the revenue they make and add to city coffers to assist with debt and programs

Dale...I disagree with your very rude and mistaken concept of Zalevs. I have dealt with them for years and have always found them to be honest and reliable. Incidentally I have paid considerable taxes. And the city makes a good profit from them. Where do you think the scrap goes that they collect. Get your info straight.

Much negative talk on the Zalev Recycling Yard. No one speaks of the contribution the Zalev operation has made to keeping Windsor an attractive city. Imagine if there were no reliable sources to collect scrap metals. As it is Zalev creates an incentive to recycle . The alternative would be huge increases in curbside metal refuse resulting in increased landfill costs to taxpayers. Derelict vehicles would litter the community( yes they buy them also). While air pollution is a concern in scrap operations , remember they were there first and should be given the chance to update to reasonable Green Standards. Their good in the community outweighs the bad.
