I had a dressing done for my right foot, which is partially amputated, last night. However, the nurses had a problem; no replacement cannister for the vacuum pump I must carry 24/7. Now this is a government institution and no one bothered to check their stock and ensure they had the materials to do their job of looking after patients. The nursing staff were frustrated and embarassed but did manage to locate a cannister at another CLSC. Someone from that CLSC, another nurse, delivered the cannister about an hour after I should have been finished and I was ready to head home around 20:45 instead of 19:30 on a normal night. To add insult to injury, the front door was locked and I was told by the security guard to use another door at the other end of the building, despite being in a large, rigid boot and using a cane for balance. The car that was picking me up was about 10 feet from the locked door, but the guard claimed he wasn't allowed to unlock the main front door. Yet another administrative failure. By the time I got home and dinner was prepared, we ate at roughly 22:00 and it was almost bedtime. If the administration of the Verdun CLSC weren't so totally opposed to providing homecare and giving me a break from running between work, dialysis and the CLSC, I would have been done much earlier. Despite reports from their own nurses, who all believe that homecare would be better for me, and a letter from the hospital explaining how tiring heading to the CLSC 3 nights a week after work was for me, the powers that be ignore the impact on my health and family life in order to stick to their guns. The nursing staff are all very efficient and compassionate but the supervisory personnel don't seem to belong in the business of helping people, especially where health is concerned.
