Took our cat in after hours and first thing they wanted was $1000 in tests. Walked back out, next day went to our Vet and same test were much less and not needed!

Treats people like walking cheque books. Avoid

I met dr mitelman a couple of weeks ago when i brought my dog in. I was quite unsure of what was wrong and i was very worried about him. i am so grateful for the care that milo received. dr mitleman promptly identified the problem and explained to me, better than any other vet in the past 20 years of owning pets, what was going on, and the possible causes and a solution. he really seemed to genuinely care about my dog, and took the time to ensure i had all the information to make the best decisions about his care. I left feeling so much relief, knowing that I had every option to help him. he was very kind and spoke with no pressure either way, if i chose to perform extra or cautionary tests or not. i felt respected, and for some reason at the vet clinics i had been going to previously, there was this underlying pressure and judgement when discussing these things. it also felt like if i questionned anything, i was made to seem like a bad person or pet owner. it seemed dr mitelman understood this as me caring about milo, (which it was) and seemed very happy to go through the tests and information thoroughly explaining what he was seeing and why.
the next day, after only 24 hours of treatment, milo was drastically better, happy, healthy, wagging his tail, i could have cried seeing him turn around so quickly. i am absolutely going back to kingston rd animal hospital for the full time care of all of my pets. dr mitlelman is a fantastic vet. i sincerely thank him and am grateful for his care and treatment of milo, and of me as a person as well. the best experience ive had at the vet in 20 years.

Found GUILTY of serious neglect and professional misconduct by the College of Veterinarians. I stopped going there after 16 years of unnecessary procedures and then over charging for them. Google Dr. Jonathan Mitelman before you walk in the door. Avoid at all costs.

I took my cat to this clinic. Standard procedure seems to be bloodwork, xrays and ultrasound whenever a pet is taken in after hours even if they aren't all necessary. In my case, my cat wasn't critical and I explained that she had a reaction to the medication she was on before. They could have put her on IV for a couple of days and done blood work but they also wanted to do xrays and ultrasound. The bills added up very quickly. Three weeks later after trying a different medication, the same thing happened. The vet at night tried to tell me I needed to do xrays and an ultrasound again, even though I told him her history. After removing her from the medication and scheduling her for a procedure that would eliminate the need for any meds, I asked for specific bloodwork, yet Mitelman ran yet another huge, useless panel. A month later I went back to get follow up bloodwork done, asked for the same few tests and the panel he ordered was $100 more. Now I see he's been suspended because of falsifying records, misdiagnosing a pet's condition and I am happy that someone came forward. If I have an emergency again I will take my pet to the emergency vet clinic in Scarborough on Rolark in the Birchmount and Ellesmere area. I've been there a couple of times and they didn't prey on my emotions or charge for unnecessary tests.

We recently lost our elderly and ailing cat Lucy. She was very precious to us, and my husband and I found the care and attention, from every one, but most particularly from Jonathan Mitelman to be caring, thorough and compassionate. We were guided patiently on the techniques for daily hydration, which gave our cat a few more high quality months, and us some extra time with her. Dr. Mitelman offered to do house calls when she was too frail to make the car trip to the clinic, and he called to follow up on how she was faring. On a very snowy day, one of the staff picked us up for an appointment, and drove us home.

I cannot say enough how appreciative we are of this wonderful clinic, and the caring staff. We hope Dr. Mitelman comes back in September with head held high. I would not hesitate to use their services again.

Although this vet is very friendly and personable, maybe a bit over the top. I have had two encounters with him. One on a Sunday for an emergency when my cat was very listless and not eating. I took the cat to that clinic. After several tests and $1400 in fees they were unable to diagnose the issue. At least they rehydrated the cat. I took him to my usual vet who checked him out and gave him antibiotics and the cat survived. Last year another cat went missing. I got a call from animal control that they had found here stuck in an excavation that was too deep for her to get out of and took her to DR. Mitelman's clinic where she died. I spoke to the workers at the work site where she was found. They said she was alive but not well when animal control picked her up. I asked to retrieve her body and they told me where she was. She was not injured and looked clean so I expect that she was likely dehydrated and maybe could have been saved if someone was there to pay the bill. No compassion at that clinic. I would not recommend it.

just yesterday my year and half old dog went in with a fever. the vet knowingly knowing pet wasn't covered with health care took an opportunity to cash out on help as if it was services. charged $580 for my dog to get flushed through iv because he's such a professional he figured that was necessary within 5 minutes of seeing our dog. being a concerned owner i took his expertise in his field and agreed verbally without signing any consent and paid for in advance which i never heard of. within 7 minutes he must of injected our pet impropperly with fluids or needles and he DIED !!!!!!! doctor said he was gonna advice us to put him to sleep because he looked ill not even knowing information on our dog >>>>> MONEY HUNGRY UNETHICAL

Moved to the area 1.5 yrs ago and I can't believe how many people have warned me about this vet. Where there's smoke there's fire and all the warnings are true. From terrible service, to WAY overpriced procedures, to pushing expensive tests that aren't required, to killing pets due to negligence.

The manager of this clinic is also the administrator for the Facebook "Beaches" page. Many many many people on this FB page complain about this clinic and she deletes there posts which is a conflict of interest not allowing people to give there opinions on local businesses.

Don't be mesmerized by the big street sign or claims of donations they make for pets (sure when you're charging double or triple for basic services I'm sure it's easy to make small donations)

Don't listen to me or even the other 4 star reviews on Yelp from friends, family and employees of the clinic. I challenge you to ask 5 pet owners in the area about this clinic and you'll find the answer for yourself

STAY AWAY !!! There are much better clinics in the area that will charge you MUCH less and will give you much better appropriate service.

Despite any negative criticisms levelled at Kingston Road Animal Hospital.

We had nothing but wonderful caring attention with our Tabby cat Nelly, this last week. The entire staff and senior vets were very attentive. She was dying from kidney failure and we thought we would never see her again. However through the wonderful care and attention Nelly received, she has recovered and is here hale and hearty back at home with us.Our grateful thanks go to all at Kinston Road Animal hospital that helped to make this miracle occur. I need to say from the onset I had been a client of this clinic over 5 years ago and for 13 years. It was for the care of my previous female schnauzer who lived to be 13. After her death I did not intend to go back to this clinic as her “end of life” was not dealt with as previously discussed and agreed with by a senior veterinarian there. The only reason I did return is they had now become an emergency clinic and the closest clinic for my new dog that had become severely sick.

It was this August when my 4 year old large standard poodle became quite ill his main symptoms were lethargy and overall weakness...it was 1am on a Monday morning and I went to Kingston Road clinic in hopes that after 5 years of being away they may have become a better state of the art facility (there huge neon sign would suggest that)....I was mis-lead and wrong. The vet on call (who I notice is no longer listed on the clinics website!) quickly diagnosed dehydration and produced a $2000.00 bill for various blood work which I gasped and paid half of this bill as he would not hook my dog up to the IV until I done sol!...(nice sensitive touch)

I took my dog back to the exam room to assist the vet in getting the IV into my dogs front leg... (my dog has NEVER been overnight anywhere and never been away from me; I even groom him exclusively by myself!)...The vet then wanted to put him into a crate...the crate(s) and the entire exam room had NOT changed one bit. I was disgusted in what I saw and the crate that he had me place my best friend into was wide enough for him to lie down but he was NOT able to stand up in it! (I regret at that point that I did not leave immediately...when you’re emotionally vulnerable and worried you can make some bad decisions).

When I went to see him the next day the clinic had no exam room available even though I had booked an appointment. I was put upstairs in the office and the staff there brought me a wool blanket. My dog could hardly make it upstairs and when he did he sat beside me with his head down and looked WORSE within minutes of our visit he put his head back and began to have head tremors... HORRIFYING!!

The next day I was called at my workplace by a veterinarian from Kingston Road who basically told me that I needed to get my dog to Oakville ASAP as they felt a spinal tap and possible MRI/Cat scan was required...after trying to get my head around this shocking news he then asked “where would you like me to leave the bill?!....I gasped and could not believe the level of such insensitivity displayed at such a shocking time for me (after all I had been a bill paying client for 13 years!!! And already paid half the bill)....I hung up on him!

Thank God my very wise dog walker friend was in town for the week visiting and told me of the VEC at 920 Yonge Street Toronto where a team of world renowned neurologist’s work led by a Dr. Susan Cochrane and Dr. Debbie James. (when I called the Kingston Road vet back to inform him that I wanted to have my friend pick my dog up and take him to this VEC he had no idea who Dr. Cochrane was....huh?!)...

My friend then called me from Kingston Rd. hospital and told me that they would not release my dog to her until I had paid out my bill!!! (Now there’s some real pet priority care!)...
My best friend has an “undiagnosed brain disease”....he is still on some prednisone but has come back fully as the friend I met and adopted 4 years ago!!....Dr. James has been the primary neurologist on his case and never asked me for any money until 2 days after arriving!! She is one amazing specialist and human being, she more then I believed in a positive even a full recovery for my dog! Dr. James assisted me with finances too when it came time to pay out my bill...WOW what a difference in care and sensitivity...I will NEVER return to Kingston Road Animal hospital and needed to make other pet owners aware to not be fooled by that BIG NEON sign!!!...it’s what’s inside that matters.

My cat of eight years was in need of an urgent PU surgery when I brought him over to Vets Toronto & Kingston Road Animal Hospital. My gratitude goes out to all the wonderful people at this clinic and especially to Dr. Mitelman who helped my DJ get well.
We had to run few unexpected tests to make sure the surgery would go well and safe. But even though there was an additional cost (reasonable compared to other clinics) I am grateful they did the examination so thoroughly. Now, I am aware DJ has of a physical condition no other clinic detected before and I can take better care of him.
They were wonderful in keeping us posted on DJ’s condition while he was hospitalized. They called us every day. Now, my DJ is safe, at home and recovering well. I keep an eye on him and my heart is at ease knowing they are open 24/7 and just a phone call away.

I thought I'd share my ENTIRE experience with this clinic since not all of the reviews are all that thorough, and I disagree with some of them, so. Here's my (very detailed) and honest account of my experience with VETS during the last few days.

I didn't read any reviews when I woke up and my 14 year old cat (who I've had since I was twelve years old) was sick, vomiting and obviously in distress. It was a Sunday morning, I googled which vets were open, and I went immediately. And I'm really glad I didn't have time to read reviews, or I might have gone elsewhere.

My cat (Cleo) has had constipation issues for a long time, and we've taken her to a couple of vets who have given her enemas and sent us on our way.

Dr. Verma gave her a good inspection, and then explained her situation to me thoroughly.

She was extremely dehydrated (not surprising, it's impossible to get her to drink water) and her "little constipation issue" had snowballed. They wanted to get her on IV fluids overnight, take some X-rays to see how backed up she really was (Since they felt around and it felt like she was VERY backed up and likely unable to "go"), and take blood tests to look for things that might indicate organ issues. This, I think, from most of the reviews I've read, seems to be where the problem lies.

When the vet receives a sick pet, the vast majority of the time, they're dehydrated (even if just from vomiting) which is dangerous for a pet in and of itself. The vet can *guess* the issue a lot of the time, but blood tests give them a LOT more information to determine the proper treatment of your pet. X-rays too give them extremely valuable information. In almost EVERY negative review I've seen for this vet, it's people complaining about being "nickle and dimed," by this craaaazy vet clinic that wants to hydrate your pet, find out the underlying issue so it can be treated, and yes, keep them overnight for observation.

Don't get me wrong. When I got the quote, my heart stopped. And I cried a little. It was going to be more money than I had, and this cat is my freakin' baby. Medical expenses are... well. Expensive. Even for pets. We, as Canadians, are not used to paying them as our health care is free, so seeing a bill for an overnight stay at the vet for your pet can be shocking. I chose to apply for a small loan to cover the costs and make sure that my childhood cat was well taken care of.

While talking to Dr Verma (who was thorough in his examination of kitty, and kind and informative to me), Dr. Samson, the founder of the clinic dropped in to hear what was going on with Cleo, and gave me a few kind words (as I was a little teary lol).-----------------

They took Cleo off and told me I could visit whenever I wanted (they're open 24 hours) and call for an update anytime as well.

They kept her overnight, did her X-rays, did her blood tests and kept her on IV fluids. They called us that night to give us an update, and had us come in the next day. At this point, I was dealing with Dr. Mitelman. I must say, he was phenomenal.

When we went in, things with Cleo weren't so great. They brought her out to us in a blanket with her IV tubes all wrapped up to her paw so we could cuddle and comfort her while Dr. Mitelman explained to us in an extremely thorough, kind, non-condescending manner the EXACT situation with Cleo.

Through Xrays, they had found that she had full-blown "mega colon" now, a dangerous kitty condition where she can't get herself "going" on her own and gets constipated to the point that the fecal matter gets too big to come out. He took us into the back and showed us Xrays of a normal kitty colon compared to Cleo's Xray, and showed how backed up she was. Then he showed us an Xray of a cat who was worse off than Cleo-- "To put things into perspective," he said. (Which was a very nice thing to do, I think.) He also showed us her blood tests and explained what the elevated levels meant (she has some liver damage).

He also showed me a sample of her stool, which was completely black. Unless she had been eating something like coffee grains or soil, he said, it was probably dried blood. (And then he quizzed me for several minutes about things that she might have gotten into at home, which I thought was impressively thorough.) Since I couldn't think of ANYTHING, this meant that she might have some internal bleeding-- indicative of something more serious going on (possibly kitty cancer). He laid out our options, saying that if money was no object, he would do x, y and z to find out what was going on. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford these things, and he didn't try to pressure me at all, just laid out our plan for managing her mega colon.

He explained their planned course of action, how they needed to keep her again overnight, hydrating her and continually manually remove the blockages until she was able to go on her own. I asked about the cost and was told that they wouldn't charge me any more than I'd already been quoted.

Cleo had to stay at the vet from Sunday morning until Wednesday. For three days, they periodically manually extracted feces and waited for her to be able to go on her own--- and they didn't charge me an extra cent more than the initial quote. I called constantly for updates, and whenever a vet was available they'd call back to give me an update on how she was doing within 2-3 hours. On Tuesday morning, a friendly vet tech who answered the phone told me that she'd just seen her and Cleo was bright and alert and "very chatty this morning," which was a really wonderful thing to hear. Not just that kitty was doing well, but that the tech answering the phone knew my cat by name, and had seen her recently enough to know how she was doing.

Dr Mitelman was always exceptionally kind and wonderful on the phone, reassuring me sweetly that I "wasn't alone," and giving me informative updates that always left me feeling better, rather than worse when I got off the phone (even when the news wasn't overly positive).

I did find it a little frustrating that I kept calling to see when I could come get her and it would take a few hours to hear back from them-- and the news was usually that they wanted her to stay on overnight again. But that was really me being an over-bearing pet owner... when I think about the fact that they have a LOT of animals going through there every day (many of which are emergencies), it's actually pretty wonderful that I was able to chat to a vet twice a day for the entirety of her stay.

On Tuesday night, Dr Mitelman returned my 7 pm check-in call at 9:30 pm to let me know that they had removed the last couple of "chunks" (ick!) and she was all cleared up! (yay!) He also gave me some tentatively good news-- that the feces had turned from black to brown! It could be a bleed that temporarily stopped, he said, or it could have been something she ate that I'm not aware of.
He told me that "Her momma can probably pick her up tomorrow!" much to my elation.

On Wednesday, I called in the early afternoon when I was out of work to let them know that even if she couldn't leave yet, I was coming to visit! They told me to come on over, and within an hour or so of arriving, Dr. Benjamin was telling me that Cleo was ready to go, and was walking me carefully through her three medications (including one for the potential bleed, just in case) and the new food they were sending me home with for her.

Though clearly busy, Dr Mitelman dropped in to the room to say hi and gave me a big hug, which was super adorable.

As a last nice little warm fuzzy, when one of the two techs at reception was getting my invoice together, she mentioned "Cleo" by name, and the other tech's head shot up and she said, "Oh no, Cleo's leaving!? I'm going to miss my cuddles!" It was *wonderful* to know that someone had been giving her some loving attention, because she's a nervous cat as it is, and I had been imagining the worst in my mind for days-- my kitty feeling abandoned and scared and totally alone.

Overall... was it cheap? God no. But over the course of my cat's stay with VETS, I experienced warmth and compassion during a stressful time (a LOT of which was Dr Mitelman), updates as to my pet's condition, wonderful care for her, and a cat who returned home in a surprisingly chillaxed state when I had been anticipating traumatized agitation after a 3-night stay at the vet.

I can't say enough wonderful things, and I appreciate everything they've done.

I brought my 2 year old Chocolate Lab in to the Kingston Road Emergency Vet because he had been ill for about a month and we had tried other veterinarians but weren't taken seriously enough.

I put all my trust in to the Doctors (I think the two main Doctors were Dr. Mitelman and Dr. Samson). I won't go in to much detail about what happened but I will say it was a very difficult, very long surgery and one hell of a recovery period. We did pay a pretty penny for the surgery since it was after hours emergency and so difficult, but we were pre-warned of the costs and obviously it was worth every penny!!

I was and still am shocked at the service that we received. I received phone calls at home with updates, they let us visit whenever we wanted, they explained EVERYTHING in detail, I can go on and on and on about how lucky we were to have brought our dog here. Even the front desk staff and assistants were great during this traumatic time.

I have 3 dogs and have since moved them all to their care (non emergency) and I would highly recommend you do the same if you're looking for a new vet that 'actually' cares.

I would like to offer my gratitude & respect to the wonderful services at Kingston Road Hospital. I found my experience was that of a wonderful one & will continue to put all 3 of my cat's care in the care of these wonderful individuals! I read a few of the the other posts and find it hard to believe that people would have anything negative to say. However that does not mean that is not how they viewed it, but maybe these individuals are just a real negative bunch that find fault in others/everything & not themselves(I'm just saying), but you know those people.

I would definately recommend anyone that requires emergency care for their little fur ball to bring them here, as they saved my cat's life. Had they not been kind & understanding to my needs I would not have him with me today & both me & my girls would be devestated!! They are reasonable & from the start was up front & explained that he (Dr.Meitelmann) will not do anything that does not need to be done. I thank him with all my being & knew from the moment I met him & his staff that they have what's best for your animal at heart. As for the prices yes it can be costly, but how can you put a price on FAMILY??! If you require surgery or emerg care does treatment come cheap? These people are MEDICAL professionals & went to school for many years in order to achieve that & commend them for it. They were also very understanding to my situation & did whatever could be done to be cost effective (as a student & mother of 2 - I'm not rich by any means) but would pay it again if need be. I have nothing but good things to say. They are KIND people & kind people deserve kind things said of them so that's what I'm doing...THANK YOU DR.MEITELMANN & TEAM...KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO...CRAZY CAT & HIS HUMANS THANK YOU ALL KINDLY!

I tried to post on here before, and for some reason my post didn't appear. I stumbled on this site and was shocked at the negative posts. Disgrunted ex-employees perhaps? A client with an axe to grind, (without all the particulars being given to the people reading the posts)?

If these posters are indeed posting facts, then why would they not have addressed these so-called issues with authorities.

For many years I have worked with animals from rescue organizations. Not long ago I was seeking a second opinion on a kitten I was fostering, which was in obvious poor condition. Dr. Mitelman saw me, depsite the short notice, and me not being a regular client.

He was able to give me a diagnosis and much needed advice on how to help this little kitten thrive. He took the time, did a thorough examination, patiently answered all my questions and provided me with printed information regarding the kitten's disorder. His interest and concern was genuine.

I have used many vets in the past due to my involvement with rescue groups (most groups use their own vets), as well as my own vet. I have also worked in a vet clinic.
I am well aware of the expenses of vet visits and treatments. I found this clinic on a par, and perhaps less expensive, with costs at other clinics. What was different than many of the clinics I have used, was the quality of care and the compassion.

The ones slandering the good name of the clinc and the veterinarians would be wise to heed this quote:

"Slander is the revenge of a coward, and dissimulation of his defense"

I have just stumbled across this website and I am shocked at some of the comments.
I volunteered with a cat rescue group and last year I wanted a second opinion on a very sick kitten. I decided to go to Kingston Rd. Animal Hospital.
I was impressed with the attention given to this kitten, especially considering I was not a regular client.
Dr. Mitelman went to great lengths to determine what was wrong with this kitten and provided me detailed articles and made sensible suggestions on how to treat this it.
I would not hesitate to recommend this clinic and can only surmise that there is a group of disgruntled friends, perhaps ex-employees, that are on a personal vendetta to tarnish the clinic's reputation.

Please do not trust all the recent back to back rave reviews of this hospital. They as in Dr,Mitelman and Dr,Samson are getting there employees and top clients to make reviews on here because of recent attention brought to the CVO. I was one if the clients asked to participate in this. They have also asked many other clinics to back them as an emergency clinic. They are not a good hospital and like others said, they are only in it for the money. A few of them are the manager and doctor of this clinic that have posted on here and other sites. DO NOT TRUST YOURSELF OR PETS HERE

My chihuahua Riley is 15 yrs young and 4 1bs. Dr Mitelman has
simply been wonderful to Riley. He has had some very serious medical issues over the past 5 years. First he had a toe removed due to a cancerous lump. And now recently he has had his right eye removed after a long period (last 7 yrs) of close observation and countless treatments to no avail. Dr Mitelman has always been there for us. He has given so much of his time and expertise. He is a very compassionate and extremely understanding doctor. We have tried to be conservative, trying to keep the eye intact as long as we could to give the best quality of life. Dr Mitelman always has listened and has given as much time to me as I needed. I thank him for the wonderful laser surgeries he has done (all looking absolutely great!). Looks like my Riley will be with me (hopefully) for more years to come! Thanks to the great care we have received over the many long years I have been with this clinic. And Dr Samson, whom without words has always been more then wonderful! I would never think to go anywhere else. Mind you the wait to see the doctor sometimes is long but I have never minded. I know they are busy and I know when it is my time, they will give me all the time I need. I have 3 dogs in total and feel that this clinic takes just wonderful care of all of them. When a friend of mine who was my breeder turned very ill and her dogs needed urgent placement Dr Samson did not hesitate to help. I have been with this clinic since it opened about 30 yrs ago and I feel they are like family to me. I have absolute complete trust and faith in the care they provide and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good clinic to take your pet to.

I have been doing business with this facility for over 25 years. Drs. Samson and Mitelman have provided terrific care to my dogs, whether it's been for regular checkups, or more serious health issues, such as eye ulcers, cancer, heart failure/murmurs, respiratory problems, diabetes and alopecia. Three years ago a good friend of mine who was a breeder had a stroke and was no longer able to care for her dogs. The staff at KR Animal Hospital worked with their contacts here in Toronto and in other cities, as well as advertised on local radio, and quickly found homes for them all. The result was a ton of stress off my friend, at a time when she needed all of her energy to cope with her own difficult health situation. This is an incredible group of professionals that treats people and their pets with respect.
