He earned his law degree at the University of Victoria, did graduate studies at Dalhousie University and was an undergraduate at both the Royal Military College of Canada and Royal Roads. He left the military in 2007 in the rank of Rear Admiral. <p> Dan has extensive command experience. He was the first commanding officer of the Canadian patrol frigate HMCS TORONTO in Halifax, and he was the last sea-going captain of HMCS HURON in Victoria. He commanded a Canadian and Coalition Naval Task Group in the Persian Gulf leading at total of 20 ships from 9 nations. <p> Dan served in Ottawa as a Director-General in the areas of navy personnel, operational readiness, and Canadian Forces personnel policy. He directed the Strategic Joint Staff for the Chief of the Defence Staff. He consulted regularly with the staffs of both the Canadian Forces Legal Advisor and the Judge Advocate General. Dan was also President of the Board of Inquiry investigating the fires and casualties onboard HMCS CHICOUTIMI in 2004, for which he was commended by the head of Canada's navy. <p> Dan's areas of practice include criminal defence and civil litigation.
