I was born with a cleft lip and palate. My surgeon growing up was a pivotal role model for me. I would meet at least once a year with him, sometimes more, and I had several operations. That long-term continuity really struck me and is what really brought me into medicine and into primary care.

I always wanted to be a nurse practitioner. I grew up on the mission field in Africa, and from the time I was eight years old, I wanted to take care of people. Primary care is interesting because you have to know the whole span of life when it comes to treating people. Patience is important, and compassion.

It's really important to come in for your annual screening because even though you're healthy right now, because we want to make sure you're on the right track to keep your health for as long as you possibly can. Coming to your annual visits will make sure you're on track to do that.
